Sara Gallagher is adopted. For years she put off looking for her birth mother, but just before her wedding, she decides to find her and without too much trouble she does. Julia Lacrosse, her birth mother, is a professor at a college within driving distance from where Sara lives, but Julia wants nothing to do with Sara. She doesn't want to meet her or talk to her on the phone. She even threatens to call the police if Sara keeps stalking her.

Her adopted family and Evan, her fiancé, suggest that should be the end of it, but Sara can't leave it alone. When Sara investigates, she finds out that Julia Lacrosse is an alias for Karen Christianson. Sara's biological father is a notorious serial killer and Karen Christianson is the victim who escaped before she was murdered, but not before she was brutally raped. Sara is the daughter of the Campsite Killer and after more than thirty-five years, the police are no closer to catching him.

Through a series of leaks, that Sara can only believe came from her adopted family, Julia Lacrosse's identity becomes known and Sara is identified as the daughter of the Campsite Killer. Webpages and forums pop up on the Internet and Sara gets phone calls from sick fans of a man who has murdered and raped numerous women. Finally she get a call from the murderer himself. He wants to meet her. Her life begins to revolve around his phone calls as the police try to trace him through their conversations.

Although the buildup moves too slowly, readers will be captivated by the plot and Sara's struggle with her adoptive family. The ending is unexpected and Stevens does a good job of tying up the many threads left hanging about Sara's relationships with her family.
