If ever two people were meant for each other, Lin and Larry Pardey are that couple. Together they have sailed more than 200,000 miles. They make New Zealand their home base, cruising on board their 29-foot sailboat Taleisin a part of each year.

Bull Canyon is the story of Lin and Larry building Taleisin, a brand new 29-foot sailboat sixty miles from the sea and fifty miles from Los Angeles in a rocky outcropping known as Bull Canyon!

With them, while the boat turns from planks of wood to a seaworthy vessel, we meet their neighbors in the canyon and get caught up with the problems that can arise living without a phone, running water or electricity. Using a generator to power his tools, Larry sticks to his plans and know-how while Lin, helping when possible, (which is more than you can imagine) concentrates on her writing to bring income to their venture.

Lin is the author of ten books and too many articles to count on their sailing expertise and experiences. I admired their dedication and self-discipline to accomplish their dream in the time period they had given themselves.

I delighted in their neighbors and their make-do attitude. Also their problem-solving skills. How the Pardeys managed the amount of company they had boggles the mind.

They swore they would not take on any pets as it would be too hard to leave them behind when they took back to the sea. Somehow, they acquired both a cat named Dog and a loving and gentle dog that they convinced everyone was a guard dog.

Bull Canyon is an extremely delightful book that allowed me (for the time it took to read it) to feel a part of the authors' venture. And to feel good about that. A great summer read. Don’t miss it.
