Susan Beth Pfeffer's first book in The Last Survivors trilogy was told in a journal written by Miranda Evans, the daughter of a Pennsylvania family. While other survivors left to find some place less effected by the catastrophe, Miranda, her mother, and two brothers stayed in their home, rationing food and cutting wood for the upcoming winter. In the next book, a companion book, Pfeffer took us to New York City, where Alex Morales lived with his family. Both parents were away when disaster struck, leaving Alex with two younger sisters to care for. In this third book, Miranda's brother returns from a fishing trip with a wife. Alex and Miranda are thrown together when her dad and pregnant stepmother arrive with fellow travelers, Alex and his sister Julie. This is the second year since the disaster and food is still a problem. Volcanic ash from far-away volcano eruptions blocks out the sun, preventing the survivors from growing their own food. With barely enough for her own family, Miranda's mother must now stretch the food further until Miranda's stepmother gives birth. Miranda's dad and family intend to leave as soon as the baby is born. Too Miranda's dismay, Alex and Julie may leave even sooner. Alex and Miranda's relationship becomes serious and the outcome is surprising. This is a good end to an excellent series.
