Carter Street's gift is shape shifting, but no one knows this, not even Carter. Carter can't speak and has no memory. He was found cold, hungry, and frightened in a doorway on Carter Street, which is how he got his name. Now he lives with foster parents and is in Madame's gifted class at school.

Carter is staying in Harmony House currently. Harmony House is a hospital for troubled teens. A doctor there thinks he can help Carter recover his memory and begin to speak. Carter can only remember speaking one time and that was to a criminal. The type of person who would force him to use his gifted skills for their own means.

If he regains his voice, Carter's gifted classmates at Meadowbrook Middle School worry that Carter will talk about them and their gifts while at Harmony House. Amanda Beeson is chosen to find out what's going on. She only agrees to impress Ken who is also a member of the gifted class. Amanda's gift allows her to change bodies with another person if she feels sorry for them. There is sure to be someone at Harmony House who will grab her sympathy.

Endless stories can be told about members of the gifted class at Meadowbrook Middle School. This diversity makes the Gifted series one of my favorites for middle grade readers.
