When we came to school the other day we found a guinea pig in a cage in our classroom. Mr. Gilbert, our teacher, said we could feed him and cuddle our new classroom pet. But we noticed that the little guinea pig looked really lonely in that big cage.

So, we all asked Mr. G if he could get another guinea pig to keep the one we had company. What a good idea, right? Well, not really! It turns out Mr. G came back with a female and soon she had three babies. Now, that was kind of cool but ...

But eight weeks later there were fifteen new little babies in the cage. Wow. That wasn't good! This was not the kind of math lesson our teacher wanted to teach this class.

To deal with all the critters living in our classroom, Mr. G put a plea out to our parents asking every family to adopt at least one guinea pig. That worked pretty well but then we didn't have any more guinea pigs. Since we now had a big, empty cage, Mr. G decided to get us a new class animal.

What did he get? A rabbit. Actually, it was a rabbit with a fat tummy! Oh no, here we go again!

This is a funny picture book, and as you read it you can also practice adding and subtracting as the little furry creatures come and go in the classroom. You'll soon be able to count all the way up to twenty and then back down again!
