The ideal reference book, this atlas offers a pictorial guide to the world's people and events from 10,000 BCE to the present. You'll find maps and timelines along with picture icons sharing information on important people, technology, kingdoms, religion, and political events that occurred in each featured area.

The oversized book is divided into four major sections: the ancient world, the medieval world, the modern world and an atlas of exploration and empires. Each section is then subdivided into specific areas. For example, among the 21 mapped areas of the medieval world you'll discover maps that highlight the Byzantine Empire, the Spread of Islam, the Vikings, African Kingdoms, Central America, the Aztecs, and Southeast Asia.

The author manages to cram a lot of information into each two page spread, but he does so in a manner that is accessible and easily understood. Not only is this an essential reference for the study of the human past, but it also offers an excellent starting point for a much more detailed investigation of specific periods, cultures, and parts of the world.

Not only is this an essential volume for any school library or classroom, but it will also come in very handy at home as well. Every member of the family will enjoy spending a little time absorbing all the information this book has to offer.
