Luckily, I happened on an older book, Bones to Ashes, tenth in Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan forensic thriller series, published in 2007. Somehow I missed this one. You know who she is - the author of the books that inspired one of my favorite TV shows, Bones.

Like her protagonist, Reichs is a Board-Certified Forensic Anthropologist in Quebec. Her work helps to identify bones and/or bodies and establish the cause of death. Fascinating stuff and she injects her enthusiasm for her life's work into her books, of which there are enough to satisfy anyone with a yen to read of these methods and terminology.

Temperance Brennan had a childhood friend who disappeared at fourteen, and years later Tempe still wonders what happened to her buddy. When a skeleton is discovered in Acadia, Tempe is sure it is that of her old friend. She needs to know what became of the girl with whom she shared her summers.

Andrew Ryan, Tempe's lover and a detective, assists her while he investigates the disappearance of young girls over a period of time. Their quests seem to intersect and they run into stumbling blocks that will keep readers on the edges of their seats.

Reichs maintains the suspense well until the surprising ending. She is as adept in her forensic work as she is at writing, which she has proven many times over. Bones to Ashes is well worth a read.
