Zephyr grew up in Montana where she saw and participated in the murder of vampires and Others while working with her dad, a renowned demon hunter. Now, to atone for her past, she teaches English to underprivileged immigrants (including vampires) at a city night school. This pays for her rent at the ladies' boarding house where she lives. There she is always at odds with the owner whose strict rules don't reflect the rights of modern women. During the day Zephyr works at soup kitchens and attends suffragette meetings. While bicycling to school, Zephyr finds a newly-turned vampire boy. Rather than turning him over to the police she rescues him, determined to find his family. The police would only kill him. Young vampires are difficult to manage when the first hunger strikes them. One of her students agrees to hide the boy if she'll help him with a problem of his own. He needs to find and expose the vampire mafia boss, Rinaldo. Feisty and brave, Montana-born Zephyr Hollis is just what New York needs to clean up the city during the hard times of the twenties. Johnson has a different spin on the life of vampires and Others and she drops her characters into a setting that is sure to appeal to readers. This should be a long and popular series.
