War Stories of the Battle of the Bulge features the stories of the officers and enlisted men who had to turn back the German's desperate counterattack that was intended to blunt the American push into their homeland. The German counteroffensive operation, dubbed Wacht am Rhein, was launched against the American First Army beginning on December 16, 1944, and lasted until January 28th of the following year. The campaign cost the Allies nearly 80,000 lives while German casualties are estimated at between 90,000 to 120,000 men. Over fifty narratives of various lengths describe the tank battles, life in the frozen foxholes, and the struggle to hold positions in the Ardennes Forest of Belgium and Luxembourg as the German onslaught punched huge holes in the American front line. Two maps and 32 black and white photos accompany the text and will help the reader visualize the frigid battlefield conditions. An earlier volume released last year by the same publisher, War Stories of D-Day: Operation Overlord, June 6, 1944, is a similar collection of stories that focuses on the Normandy invasion. The men who contributed to this book included not only the soldiers who stormed the French beaches but also the paratroopers dropped behind German lines, and the Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and Air Force personnel who supported the invasion.
