Fourteen poems are featured in this picture book that looks at every facet of the Great Egret's life. The majestic bird, with its big feet and even bigger beak, and its breathtaking lacy wings, is captured in flight and in its marsh habitat by photographer Jason Stemple.

Jane Yolen's short poetry accompanies the color photos and captures the beauty, quirky behavior, and daily habits of these magnificent birds. Interesting egret facts are included with each two page spread which provides information about the bird's eating, grooming, and mating habits.

Found in many wetland areas, Great Egrets feed on crayfish, frogs, snakes, algae and small fish. Their plumage was once so sought after that in the late 19th century an ounce of egret feathers was worth an ounce of gold.

Because of their valuable feathers, Great Egrets were nearly hunted to extinction but their numbers have been greatly restored, although pollutants in wetlands still pose a risk to the birds.

All bird lovers, young and old, will appreciate the photos and poetry that celebrate this very special bird.
