Like horseracing? The Significant Seven is the book for you. Don't give a tinker's dam about horseracing but do like mysteries? The Significant Seven is still for you.

In this fourth novel about the sport of kings, Jack Doyle goes undercover behind the scenes at a race track to discover who is sponging race horses (a small sponge is inserted deep into the horse's nostril to impede its breathing, thus making a sure winner into a sure loser).

A group of men (you guessed it – the seven in the title) pooled their money and bought a racehorse. This eventually grows into a big thing. Then the first of the seven expires. One by one, members of the seven die under what appear to be legitimate circumstances – their ends do not appear to be hastened along by someone else.

Jack suspects foul play. While investigating on his own, he ends up protecting the daughter of the Significant Seven's leader, who is dying of lung cancer.

As usual, this offering by Poisoned Pen Press is a good one. Author John McEvoy has the right touch to create suspense and intrigue and carry it from the first page to the last. Spring Break is fast approaching. This is a good book to have with you as you enjoy the fine weather to come.
