Fifteen-year-old Nate is a displaced teenager who misses his home in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since his parent's marital separation he's been stuck in New York City with his mother who's taken a temporary job there. Knowing they are going home when her assignment is done is the only thing Nate has to look forward to now that his dad has canceled their upcoming summer kayaking trip.

Now there are rumors that his mother's job might become permanent. Angry and frustrated, Nate decides to strike out on his own. Not telling his mother that his dad has cancelled, he heads home to Vancouver to pick up the vacation gear and go kayaking alone.

Nate's plans for quiet solitude to commune with the nature ends when a huge storm rolls the kayak. Solitude is also out of the question. While he's glad he ran into Kat (a Goth girl on a sailboat), he's troubled by a stranded motorboat with a trio of questionable teenage runaways. Throw in dangerous drug smugglers and the suspense keeps cranking up.

With an island backdrop off the coast of Vancouver, Nate's journey grabs readers and holds on until the conclusion.
