I did not want to put down Prophecy of the Sisters, but I had to because there were parts that scared the bejeezus out of me. Michelle Zink certainly knows how to write a captivating historical dark fantasy.

After her father's death, Lia Milthorpe develops an odd mark on her wrist. Her twin sister Alice also starts to act weirdly. The pinnacle of the mysterious happenings, though, rests with a book that Lia's intended, James, finds while cleaning out her father's library. The book contains a prophecy about twin sisters – one the guardian, one the gate who control the fate of the Lost Souls. The older twin is always the gate and the younger the guardian. Except that something happened during Lia's and Alice's birth. Alice was meant to come first, but the doctor had to perform a cesarean and Lia entered the world before her sister. Their roles are reversed, but with her good heart, Lia knows she can end the prophecy, if only she can find the keys before her sister.

Zink excels at creating atmosphere, and that is what makes Prophecy of the Sisters truly terrifying. The shadowed halls of Birchwood serve to enhance Lia's feeling of isolation and Alice's creepy intentions. Zink also does an ecceptional job of showing Lia's emotions, especially when she debates whether or not to tell James about her role in the prophecy. Even though I did not agree with her choice, it was a well thought out one, not one made willy-nilly.

Prophecy of the Sisters is a unique dark fantasy that YA readers, young and old alike, will simply devour. Michelle Zink certainly has a winner on her hands with this trilogy.
