In M. C. Beaton's latest Highland mystery, we find Hamish Macbeth at the altar waiting for his bride to walk down the aisle! Yes, you read that right. Our Hamish getting married, tying the knot, being hitched! Not to be believed. He spends most of every book avoiding the clutches of eager women.

Yet, here he is. What's that? He's saying something. To himself. 'Dear God, if there is a God, get me out of this!' Now, that's our Hamish.

Because of a promotion to Sergeant, he is entitled to some help with running the village of Lochdubh's police station. Josie McSween appears, expecting to be put up in the station. Instead, Hamish books her into a private home. In spite of this, Josie sets her cap for Hamish. Everyone in Lochdubh thinks she is the right one for him. Hamish disagrees.

When a recent murder in a neighboring village puts the heat on Hamish's dectecting skills, he discovers that Josie has none at all.

I hated for this lovely addition to Beaton's long list of Hamish novels to end. Fun, delightful, a devilish plot. All anyone could ask for in their reading. But the most important part is Hamish himself. Don't miss Death of a Valentine.
