When her grandmother dies she leaves Schuyler an emancipated minor, but requests that Schuyler find her grandfather. He is the only one who can help her fight the Silver Bloods, vampires who prey on the Blue Bloods. Her grandmother and several other Blue Bloods have died mysteriously and Schuyler alone believes her grandmother's certainty that the Silver Bloods still exist. The Blue Bloods Committee refuses to take action on an old woman's words and Schuyler worries that they have been infiltrated by the Silver Bloods.

Masquerade begins with Schuyler and Oliver in Venice searching for Schuyler's grandfather. Schuyler hopes to convince him to return to New York with her. He refuses. Depressed, she and her best friend, Oliver Hazard-Perry, return to New York. Oliver tries to comfort her, but sadly all she can think about is drinking his blood. Hazard-Perry is her human conduit and that's not allowed.

Back in New York City, the Blue Bloods are planning the Four Hundred Ball which will introduce many of the young vampires to Blue Blood society under the names they are using in their present life cycle. Schuyler is not old enough to be introduced but as a Blue Blood she is invited. Still trying to come to terms with being a vampire and the Committee which runs the lives of all the New York Blue Bloods, Schuyler almost skips the ball. Being kissed by Jack Force during the post ball masquerade party makes attending worthwhile.

De La Cruz deftly pulls us further into the story of an ancient group of vampires who run New York City with their wealth and power.
