n adventure in mimicry, Winter's tiny biography of Gertrude Stein is filled with vibrant pictures, 20th-century writers, and text that loops around the page. Winter styles his writing after Stein's, creating wild pages like, '
Artists are artists and artists will be artists. What will writers be we do not know. Just writers probably.
hile I think the vibrant colors and amusing caricatures would appeal to the targeted age group for this book (4-8), the text is so confusing I can't imagine a child making it through 3 pages without asking 300 questions. The nonsensical patterns may have worked for Stein, but they simply muddy a children's book.
nless you are a huge Stein fan and want to expose your child to her as soon as possible, I would pass on this one.
