An adventure in mimicry, Winter's tiny biography of Gertrude Stein is filled with vibrant pictures, 20th-century writers, and text that loops around the page. Winter styles his writing after Stein's, creating wild pages like, 'Artists are artists and artists will be artists. What will writers be we do not know. Just writers probably.'

While I think the vibrant colors and amusing caricatures would appeal to the targeted age group for this book (4-8), the text is so confusing I can't imagine a child making it through 3 pages without asking 300 questions. The nonsensical patterns may have worked for Stein, but they simply muddy a children's book.

Unless you are a huge Stein fan and want to expose your child to her as soon as possible, I would pass on this one.
