It has been a year since Samuel's mother died, and he, his brother and dad are still in a funk over it. Samuel is a very bright high school student, but he does not allow himself to get close to anyone, except maybe Melody.

Samuel's discovery of a deformed set of triplets triggers a series of events that enable him finally to find out what he is made of. Author Pak deftly gives us the high school milieu, complete with smoking, detention, skipping classes. The conversations feel exactly right, and it is so good to have the multiethnic population captured.

A slight warning is in order. This book is not for the faint-hearted; there is quite a bit of violence. And, although the story succeeds in and of itself, I'm wondering whether the character of Samuel, portrayed as a really decent, fair-minded person, would really be able to allow himself to do the things he does. He is certainly going to have trouble with the fallout from the end action the rest of his life. Let me know what you think.
