Author Lisa Black, a latent fingerprint examiner and former forensic scientist, has testified in more than forty-five homicide trials. So it is a given that she writes knowingly about her character, forensic investigator Theresa MacLean, in Evidence of Murder, the second in a series.

A difficult case arises while Theresa is still recovering from the death of her fiancé in a bank robbery - her powers of concentration are not as acute as they should be. Jillian Perry has been found dead in the woods – dead for no apparent reason. Theresa feels that there is something here that she is not catching. Then she realizes the dead woman's baby daughter might also be at risk. Though told by her superiors to back off, she is sure that Jillian's husband is to blame for her death and that he is likely to kill Jillian's child, in order to inherit the small fortune that would keep his business afloat.

Blaming herself for not catching tiny clues, she attempts to ferret out all she can to convict this cold-blooded man. The clues that send her on to the next aspect of the case are small but Theresa muddles on to get justice for Jillian. The ending is a thrilling one.

This is a simple plot that escalates as each page is turned; but it is also intriguing. Action moves through the whole, becoming more and more fast-paced. I like the protagonist very much. She trusts her instincts and is willing to act on them – to her own detriment if necessary. Evidence of Murder is good reading and this reviewer looks forward to more of Theresa MacLean.
