This time he has been hired by glamorous lawyer Rita Fiore (who still has the hots for the PI and soon casts her eye over sidekick Hawk) to defend her dumb, dumber, dumbest client Mary Smith. Despite strong circumstantial evidence to the contrary, Mary claims she didn't kill her much older husband Nathan. As usual, Spenser suspects that there is a lot he isn't being told ... by his client and her high school boyfriend; by a man who claims that Mary paid him to kill her husband; by an employee at the bank that Nathan owned; by Mary's gay PR guy who accompanies her everywhere; and by a high-priced attorney suspiciously representing a lowlife client. As Spenser starts to poke around in his investigation, he is followed and people begin to die. All our favorites are involved - Susan sharing her grief at the suicide of a patient; an ageing Pearl who is now 'deaf as a turnip'; Hawk guarding Spenser's back and contributing to the zippy dialog that drives these plots along. Though it lacks the serious social commentary of some of Parker's early stories, Widow's Walk maintains the style and enjoyment of a vintage series; if you've been missing Spenser, dive right in.
