Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman have penned a tale that captures the essence of the comic book X-Men, but have put a decidingly shojo spin on it that teen girls will love. Anzu's art has a great Japanese shojo feel but with a definite American shojo element. Fifteen-year-old Kitty Pryde has been feeling more and more like an outcast as she finds herself falling through walls and floors with increasing regularity. Upon returning home one day, she gets an offer from strange Eric Lehnsherr to attend Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Tired of being called a mutant and having trouble controlling her ability, Kitty agrees. However, no one warned her that she would be the first female student the school has had in a long time, causing her to still feel like an outcast. Soon, though, she is accepted into the elite Hellfire Club, and dating one of its most attractive members. Things seem to be looking up for Kitty, but has her desire to be accepted put her in with the wrong crowd? X-men 1: Misfits is a great shojo tale that mixes typical teen feelings of rejection with a realistic romance – and some hot bishonen. The X-Men characters are instantly recognizable even with Anzu's manga treatment (although Wolverine always appears in actual wolverine form, which threw me for a little). Telgemeier and Roman chose to set the story in the modern time, but in a story arc before Magneto and many others separate themselves from Professor Xavier, which helps to bring new fans in on a ground floor, so to speak. Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman's amazing story, combined with Anzu's delicious artwork, make X-men 1: Misfits a must for any OEL shojo fan, as well as any girl who loves the X-Men (especially the X-Men: Evolution cartoon).
