Author Luis Miguel Rocha found an audience with his first novel The Last Pope. His fans will be glad to be able to pick up his latest, The Holy Bullet.

This thriller skips around cities in the world, never losing sight of the main objective - to kill the pope! How the conspirators hope to bring this about is handled by no one in the string of participants knowing who the next in line is. I have to admit this confused me most of the time as location changed with each chapter. But, that is probably just me. I then must state that I enjoyed the book very much. It just took an extra bit of concentration.

What did strike me is the power that the Catholic Church holds in this old world of ours. Frighteningly so, if all that is brought out by this tightly written novel is, in fact, true. We meet an international journalist, a war-weary Portuguese veteran, a Muslim with visions of the Virgin Mary, a rogue priest, and members of the most powerful organizations in the world. While some of the above-mentioned, by studying the death of Pope John I, work to prevent the death of John Paul II, other factions work to duplicate that assassination.

This cleverly written plot keeps the reader on tenterhooks for most of the novel with the hope that this is, after all, completely a work of fiction. The reader must judge for his/her own self.
