Sharon McCone is always ready to take time off from her investigative business for family members in trouble, but this time it's her own life that intrudes. While at the wedding of her former brother-in-law to her current employee, she receives the news that her father has died. As executor, it's Sharon's job to sort through his effects, which requires much sifting of old boxes in her dad's garage. Incredibly, she finds a petition for adoption with her name listed as the child.

This begins Sharon's quest into her Native American roots. As her dad is dead and her mom isn't talking, her task is not easy. But other family friends and relatives are willing enough to share what they know, so it isn't long before Sharon finds her biological mother. Of course, being a mystery, this is just the beginning of the story ...

Muller's McCone novels are entertaining and this one is no exception. McCone is tough but not invincible; her vulnerability is one of the attractions of the series. Tracing your roots is an old, old story, but in Muller's capable hands it receives a good treatment and the new family members promise to be interesting additions to McCone's current set of eccentric relations. Listen to the Silence is a nice addition to a long tradition.
