Mucumber McGee, in the second book following his adventures in food (Mucumber McGee and the Half-Eaten Hot Dog, 2007), has a small problem. He was late to lunch at his school cafeteria, and all the lunch lady had left to serve was her own special recipe of liver cake.

His older sister taunts him, leading him to believe the liver could really be spleen - or even a small woodland creature! Threatened by the lunch lady that he must eat every bite, Mucumber is surprised when he discovers he does, in fact, like liver. Writes Loehr, 'It tasted simply wonderful. / So fresh - and so nutritious!'

Young readers will identify with Mucumber's wariness of strange foods, and parents will love the tale's encouragement that these strange foods might actually be good. The dark, macabre illustrations look like they belong in A Series of Unfortunate Events; shadow-eyed children give this silly tale a haunted-house feel. With a life lesson and fun rhymes, Mucumber McGee and the Lunch Lady's Liver is a good read for grades 1-3.
