A counting book for youngsters between the ages of three and six, this collaboration of a husband and wife creative team celebrates the wonder of being outdoors on a sunny day.

As a young girl in a red jumper, with her teddy bear in tow in a red wagon, ventures forth, she is greeted by a number of animals. For example, she encounters a pig prancing, two ducks dancing, three chicks cheeping and four lambs leaping. The count continues higher with turtles, swallows, ferrets, squirrels, hamsters, and llamas. After a wonderful outing, the happy child proclaims that she is happy to be part of all this happy activity on such a 'beautiful day'.

You and your child can join the girl as she enjoys her outing. Also be sure to count all the creatures from the twirling turtles in their dancing outfits to the swirling swallows wearing little brown hats. Besides elementary counting skills, the simple sentences of the text obviously feature some fun alliteration.

Robin Spowart's artwork using pastels gives the illustrations a nice texture and makes them pleasing to the eye. I would venture a guess that this splendid counting book will quickly become one of your child's story time favorites.
