Although the McPherson books are not of the same high caliber as McCrumb's Appalachian Ballad series, they are still reliably entertaining. In this one, McPherson is severely depressed over the loss of her husband Cameron in a boating accident and ends up a patient in the Cherry Hill Psychiatric Hospital. Something said by a fellow patient draws Elizabeth into a fifty year old mystery involving a bootlegger who just happens to be living in an old house recently purchased by her attorney brother Bill. A parallel plot from which the title is drawn features her brother's law partner A.P. Hill. The PMS Outlaws, an escaped convict and her attorney, take revenge on lustful men, leaving them naked and humiliated ... and use Hill's name as an alias. As usual the books are well-plotted and amusing with their variety of eccentric characters both in and out of the mental hospital.
