In Reunion, Therese Fowler takes what seems at first to be a same old, same old plot and reinvents it with an unusual twist and charming characters.

The driven protagonist, Harmony Blue Kucharski, grew up in poverty. After being rejected in love by literature professor Mitch Forrester, her rebound fling left her pregnant. At nineteen, unable to care for a child, she agreed to a closed adoption engineered by her midwife, and gave away her son at birth - to her ultimate regret. She never told her free-spirited mother Nancy or her sister about the pregnancy.

Twenty years later, Blue Reynolds is a very wealthy talk show host and super-celebrity, based in Chicago. She has hired a private investigator to find her long lost son (through the midwife), wanting at least to assure herself that he has a good life.

When Blue and her crew spend a week in Key West to do a show there, she reconnects with her old love, Mitch Forrester, and his family, including his estranged son Julian (a photographer and documentary filmmaker who is nine years younger than Blue). Blue impulse buys a two million dollar home that catches her eye and begins to yearn for a different kind of life. She helps Mitch launch a TV series on Literary Lions and they begin to date again.

Which is where the author takes her plot off the usual track to explore what happens when the past catches up with Blue, and her response to present opportunities takes her by surprise. Reunion is a fast, light read, yet a very satisfying one that looks at what life's all about and where we should focus our energies.
