Wollie Shelley, greeting card artist and multiple dater, is approached to sign on with a group that seems shady at the very least. She is then recruited by the FBI to act undercover to discover this group's mission. Foreign nationals are being brought into the country and her job is, ostensibly, to make them socially conscious of Americans manners and behavior codes.

When she learns that her predecessor Chai died in a car accident and she is to wear her clothes, Wollie becomes uneasy. When Chai's boyfriend shows up in the middle of the night claiming that Chai was murdered, Wollie is ready to leave her place of employment. Her boss Yuri takes her into his confidence and she begins to feel a sense of loyalty to him. Her boyfriend Simon works for the government in some capacity, the details of which Wollie is never clearly cognizant.

It all starts out as a simple job to keep her paranoid schizophrenic brother in the state run home he loves. Wollie is determined to do almost anything to keep him happy and safe. A Date You Can't Refuse has a convoluted plot that twists back and forth with characters who stretch the boundaries of reality. Fun ones, though.

Author Kozak has a keen sense of humor with a dry wit. Look for the witticisms or you may miss them. This novel is the fourth in the Wollie Shelley series (whose books have gotten good reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, and The Chicago Sun times as well as plaudits from Janet Evanovich).
