An apparently suicidal man detonates an explosion on a busy London street, and Scotland Yard suspects something more than the desperate act of a despondent man. In fact, authorities receive a threatening letter that promises more explosions and killings unless the government takes actions to alleviate the suffering of military veterans. Maisie's coincidental proximity to the explosion and the mysterious letter writer's insistence upon the psychologist's involvement in the case means that whether she likes it or not Maisie Dobbs is now very much a part of the investigative team. As Maisie soon suspects, someone tormented by memories and ghosts from the Great War may be the person responsible for the murderous mayhem.
