Edna Lewis, a descendant of slaves, was raised on land in the southern part of the United States purchased by her grandfather. The story tells how she and her family celebrated each season's harvest. In the winter, they gathered nuts and made nut-butter cookies and walnut bread; in the summer, they picked blackberries and made cobbler and pudding; and of course, apples were picked during the fall and transformed into apple butter, cider and applesauce. The family formed bonds while working together in the fields and sitting at the dinner table eating what they cultivated. They also sang spirituals as they worked: 'Don't ask me no questions, an' I won’t tell you no lies. But bring me some apples, An' I'll make you some pies. And if you ask questions 'bout my havin' the flour, I'll forget to use 'lasses, An' the pie'll be sour.' The illustrations depict a close-knit family enjoying the fruits of their labor. This book also celebrates the organic food movement, reverting back to an earlier, simpler time before processed foods and grocery store chains were introduced to America.
