Lois Meade of Long Farnden, owner of the business New Brooms, is once again immersed in more than keeping the village's businesses and homes clean. She's on the trail of men who are badger baiting badgers are on the endangered species list and the baiting is inhumane at best. But why, she wonders, are old folk disappearing said to have gone on to nursing homes, but with no forewarning. It just doesn't sit right with our Lois.

Lois is the protagonist of the Long Farnden series, so far ranging from Murder on Monday through the week to Secrets on Saturday. With each successive book, we, the readers, become more closely connected to Lois and her family namely, her mother Gran, her husband Derek, and her daughter Jodie. I like Lois. She is true to that which she believes. She has courage, although, at times, foolishly used. She apologizes when she's wrong. Hard to do. And, like a pit bull, she bites down and hangs on until the job is done.

In Secrets on Saturday, Lois becomes aware of mysterious men slinking through deep woods, as well as being on the lookout for any clues as to what happened to the two old men the village is concerned about. Her own welfare is jeopardized. But when that of her family is threatened, she mobilizes and joins forces with the local constable, Hunter Cowgill. Together, along with her disgruntled husband Derek, they clean up the village. For now, anyway.
