This is the spare story of a lost bear. Actually, the bear isn't so much lost as confused as to what he is doing in the city.

It seems as if he knew he had a purpose for being there, and he wanders around trying to recall just exactly what that is, all the while carrying his trumpet. He meets a few people and lives on the streets, where, sadly, he comes across other lonely, homeless or lost people who seem as bewildered as he is.

The mystery is solved when he sees a sign posted that he is to perform in a concert. Unfortunately, his trumpet was stolen, but he finds a homeless person, who lends him a trumpet that she has in her shopping cart. When he plays the trumpet for a crowd of people, Addis Berner Bear finally realizes his purpose in this world.

The watercolor pictures are lovely and they tell much of the story, but I doubt that young children will fully comprehend this melancholy picture book.
