Fifteen-year-old Claire Voyante's dreams are special. They always preview events that will come up in the future, but she is confused about what she should do with this psychic gift. Everything is vague and unclear with no hint of what's important.

Claire's parents force her to leave a creative private school that she's gone to all her life and enroll at Hudson High, a public Lower East Side school known for its competitive math and science programs. Claire is finding it impossible to make friends there. She only knows one person, an ex-friend who lives in her apartment complex. The problem is they've been enemies since a falling out at summer camp.

Before school starts, her grandmother, Kiki, gives Claire a black and white onyx cameo that she says will enhance Claire's psychic talent. When Claire meets Becca Shuttlewort, also new to Hudson High, she notices that all of her dreams are tied to Becca. Sure that Becca and her super-rich family are in danger, Claire begins looking at her dreams for clues.

The mystery doesn't really get started until halfway through the book, but Mechling's characters are real enough to hold the readers' interest until then. Claire, her family, friends, and even her old enemy, are all genuine. Mechling manages to deepen their characterizations without resorting to quirky.
