Stumbled over an older Tony Hillerman book, one I hadn't read! What bliss. As always, Hillerman produces a great read - one filled with suspense, intrigue, greed, horror and a wonderful depth of knowledge of the Navajo Indian, which he shares with his readers. A dying man is murdered. A box of rocks is stolen. Too many cases of cancer seem unusual. Each incident turns over more possible crimes. Tribal Policeman Jim Chee is on the trail of a murderer for hire and almost ends up a victim.

This is the book where he meets the woman he wants to be the light of his life, Mary Landan. The only catch is that she's white. People of Darkness takes Chee and Mary into the Bad Country of New Mexico, where they look for the bones of a dead man in a blowhole in a canyon. The trail goes back thirty years to an explosion at an oil field, with nefarious doings ever since. Of course Chee brings everything to a satisfying conclusion, though not without great danger to himself and Mary.

Hillerman always writes engrossing stories and People of Darkness is no exception.
