I thought I'd seen everything possible in kids' counting books but 10 Trick-or-Treaters: A Halloween Counting Book takes the candy - and counts it too! The trick-or-treater countdown is written in verse.

It opens with '10 trick-or-treaters / on a dark and spooky night / out to get some candy / or give someone a fright - and counts down from there as each trick-or-treater is eliminated one by one. The costumed children are scared off by a variety of creepy critters - spider, toad, bat, ghost, skeleton, witch, monster, vampire, and a mummy.

Finally, there's only 'one brave trick-or-treater/ her Halloween is done. / She climbed into bed ... / and then there were none.' The young reader is left - just like on Halloween night - with only candy to count, a happy conclusion.
