Children's Poet Laureate Jack Prelutsky has written a wonderful volume of hilarious verses on a variety of subjects. They range from the nonsensical to the clever to the wry to the laugh-out-loud funny. The poems perfectly capture a child's view of his world as well as his or her attempt to make sense of that world.

The poems are the perfect length to make them readable in short intervals. Prelutsky's rhythms are never off-kilter. Most are accompanied by gray pencil sketches that are as whimsical as the rhymes. The following (I Never Sit on Scrambled Eggs) is typical of the poems in this truly funny collection:

'I never sit on scrambled eggs,
I know it isn't right.
I never swim in pudding,
it's considered impolite.
I never mash bananas
in my sister's curly hair,
and seldom stuff spaghetti
down my brotherís underwear.

I do not dance in oatmeal,
it makes messes on the floor.
I do not juggle gelatin,
at least not anymore.
I do not swing at watermelons
with my baseball bat ---
my mother says the things I do
are worse than all of that.
'

All the poems have this in common: children will love them.
