Laurel Gray Hawthorne, along with her husband David and daughter Shelby, lives in the picturesque Southern town of Victorianna - a far cry from the poverty-ridden, blue collar town of DeLop, where she grew up.

Imagine her surprise when a ghost appears to her one evening and leads her to the body of Shelby's friend Molly, who has drowned in Laurel's backyard pool. While the death is ruled an accident, Laurel is not so sure. When it appears that Shelby and her friend Bet may be involved, Laurel enlists the help of her eccentric and unconventional sister Thalia.

On top of worrying about Shelby, Laurel has reason to suspect that David is cheating on her. And the longer Thalia is with her, the more Laurel uncovers about her own childhood ... and the events surrounding the death of their Uncle Marty. Will Laurel be able to maintain order in her previously structured life before it unravels?

The storyline of The Girl Who Stopped Swimming is often confusing to follow, as it frequently jumps from the present day to the past - even within the same chapter. However the engaging characters hold a reader's interest.
