Jewel and Alice have been best friends all their lives. Since he lives right next door, they do everything together. They are both part of the art crowd at school and are happy to blend in. Alice calls it being invisible.

If Alice hadn't developed a crush on Simon Murphy, a cool football player, she might have been content to stay in their cocoon of two forever. But when your best friend is a boy, should you share your crush with him, especially when you both agree that being a football player shouldn't mean you get special attention? And who do you choose when both your crush and your best friend want to take you to the Halloween dance?

When Alice begins dating Simon she loses Jewel, who begins dating a very talented artist in their art class. When Alice makes new friends she finds she doesn't mind not being invisible.

Alice makes this often told story memorable. Gallagher's voice is strong. Her well developed characters and Seattle setting, with its coffee shops and markets, make The Opposite of Invisible a winner.
