When Drew's parents go to France, he is left with Great-Aunt Blythe in Missouri. He loves Aunt Blythe but when he sees her gloomy old house in the country he wants to turn around and go home. Before his parents leave he meets his great grandfather and has even more reason not to want to stay. His grandfather calls him Andrew and whoever Andrew was, Grandfather didn't like him.

Footsteps in the attic, never ending rain, and the possibility of a ghost haunt Drew's first day. On a trip to the attic with Aunt Blythe, he discovers a valuable bag of marbles and a note with a warning, 'These marbles belong to Andrew Joseph Tyler / If you take them you will be sorry. / 7 June, 1910'.

Drew meets his ancestor Andrew who could be his twin – if he weren't dead. Andrew has the idea of changing places with Drew so that modern medicine can cure him of the diphtheria which eventually killed him. Drew is reluctant, but somehow Andrew manages the switch. Will Drew die in Andrew's place?

Popular award-winning writer Mary Downing Hahn has published more than twenty books. Her specialty is ghost stores. This one is a little short on suspense but makes up for it with interesting and likeable characters on both sides of 1910. Drew and Andrew get top grades for pulling off the switch and managing to stay in character although they lived a life time apart.
