It is very hard to believe that When One Man Dies is author Dave White's debut novel. The book is expertly plotted, has finely drawn characters, very understandable motivations, and is set practically in my very own backyard – New Jersey.

What a pleasure it was to read – although admittedly scary in some parts and downright violent in others. The lead is Jackson Donne, ex-cop turned PI. He's planning to put his past behind him – his fiancée dead at the wheel of a drunk driver, and the scandal of his dismissal from the police force - and leave his current job also, to go back to college at the ripe old age of twenty-eight.

However, those plans go awry when an old friend is run down by a hit-and-run driver. Another friend wants him to find the culprit and bring him to justice. A woman asks him to follow her husband and make sure he isn't cheating on her. How these events tie together involves clever writing. What unfolds is horror at its peak. Skillfully written, each page seems to turn itself. The book is quickly read because it's so hard to put down.

I won't tell any more of the plot. It's too good to reveal. Read the book and see for yourself. Would I ever steer you wrong? Never. And I love the title. Just an interesting tidbit - it's taken from a quote by Joseph Stalin: 'When one man dies, it's a tragedy. When thousands die, it's statistics.'
