Where is she? Why isn't she still behind bars? Is she still a threat? None of them seem to have any answers to the questions they repeatedly ask, but the articles keep pouring off the news pages. Sixteen-year-old Alice Tully reads every article she can find although she is unable to explain why to her boyfriend Frankie. Alice has plans for her future. She wants to live with Rose in her foster home while she goes to college and continue to work at the coffee shop. She never dreamed she would be able to do these normal things that others take for granted. When she was ten she did something so horrendous that she hates to even think about it. When Alice was ten she murdered a friend. Or Jennifer Jones did. Jennifer Jones is now Alice Tully. To hold on to her fresh start on life, Alice must keep her past a secret. When a detective begins haunting the coffee shop where she works, looking for Jennifer Jones, Alice is not sure she'll be able to keep who she is hidden. What brought him there? Alice may have sabotaged herself by mailing a birthday card to her mother. As usual her mother has sold her out. Only perhaps this time it wasn't deliberate. The newspapers say she has a permanent home for Jennifer, the one thing Jennifer always hoped for. Cassidy does a excellent job of seamlessly switching from Alice in the present to Jennifer Jones the child. She gently paints a picture of Jennifer's life before her crime. The subject of children who kill other children is a frightening one, but award-winning British author Anne Cassidy treats it with empathy.
