Linda Greenlaw, author of the non-fiction bestsellers The Hungry Ocean, All Fishermen are Liars, and The Lobster Chronicles has now turned to fiction writing. With Slipknot, she has brought a delightful new mystery series to publication.

Marine investigator Jane Bunker has returned to her childhood home in Maine to start a new phase of her life. The job of finding and capturing criminals that she engaged in in Miami no longer suited her. She longed for the slower and safer life that she felt the fishing community of Green Haven would afford her. Full of tourists and hard working fishermen, Green Haven seemed to be her answer for a bucolic life.

We all make mistakes and Jane Bunker is no exception. Her arrival in Green Haven is punctuated by finding a dead body, seemingly the victim of an accident. Jane doesn't believe this is true and launches her own digging into what she considers a murder. She weaves this into her marine investigating. Which all ends up almost costing her life.

Her wacky landlords are a breath of fresh air as is the waitress at the local café. Jane meets a number of intriguing characters as well as a possible romantic interest. The Maine fishing village she moves to is what we all think a small community should be – at least on the surface. A fight against the elements at sea is dramatic but a little heavy on the actual workings of a fishing vessel.

Since Linda Greenlaw captains a lobster boat, her descriptions are of her everyday life. She conveys it well. I look forward to more of this new series. Slipknot is a great start, and well worth the read.
