You can't go wrong with Margaret Wise Brown's words, and Richard Egielski's rich, earth-hued illustrations bring them to life in this timeless tale of 'a small pumpkin in a great big field' who wanted to grow up to be 'as fierce as the sun that warmed his fat round sides', and to 'scare the field mice out of the field like the scarecrow does.'

Then came Fall bringing 'a burning smell of leaves in the air and a crisp tingle that tickled the fat little pumpkin's sides.' The wind blew so strongly that the old scarecrow lost an eye, and the little pumpkin changed to 'The color of the sun. A fierce, burning color.' Then three children picked him to be their 'terrible pumpkin!' They carried him home, hollowed him out, and carved a fearsome face - which pleased him enormously.

After dark, the children lit a candle inside the ferocious pumpkin, and put him outside, where he happily sang: 'Ho, ho ho! / He, he, he! / Mice will run / when they see me.' What do you think they did?
