Rafael Molinet Rojas has just suffered the long illness and death of his mother. He has no wish to prolong his life, feeling that he has no more reason to live, as he can't maintain the lifestyle to which he would like to become accustomed.

His answer? Taking the three vials of sleeping pills he has accumulated. But why do it in his grungy apartment in Madrid? He'd rather go out in style. So he hies himself to L'Hirondelle d'Or, an elegant resort in Morocco.

Rafael's attention is diverted from his impending self-imposed death by a juicy scandal that hints of murder. In the opulence of the resort, Rafael delves into the background of the people involved in the gossip. What interesting folk they are. From illicit affairs to outpourings of the heart to downright intrigue and death, Carmen Posadas reaches into her characters' souls to portray their emotions, ambitions, and fears.

Posadas, author of Little Indiscretions, is able to present her players' foibles without approval or censure. They simply are. How powerful that makes them. Their motivations differ from one another but are all the same in the end. Self-interest drives each and every one. The Last Resort is a book worth reading.
