Mrs. Wow owns a cat named Meow, and a dog named Bow-Wow. Meow's chore is to catch mice, but she wants only to sleep. Bow-Wow's duty is to guard the house, but alas he only loves to eat.

While Mrs. Wow mows her lawn one day, a cow stands on the grass, joyfully munching. Mrs. Wow tries to shoo the cow away, as she really doesn't want one. But Meow and Bow-Wow decide to train the cow to do their chores. It doesn't work ... So, Mrs. Wow comes up with a great plan to make use of the cow and to get her dog and cat to do their chores!

Steven Salerno's illustrations are black-outlined figures in colorful colors, such as a purple dog, a golden cat, and a brown and white cow with a pink nose. Martha Freeman was a newspaper reporter, editor, and teacher before she began writing funny books for young readers.
