Some time ago, I reviewed books two and three of Kit Ehrman's Steve Cline series. I loved them, but had missed the first one and wanted to correct that error. I'm glad I did. At Risk is the perfect entry for a new series. All caught up in the world of horses, twenty-one year-old Steve Cline is young to be barn manager at a large horse farm in Maryland. Coming from money and privilege, he turned his back on the education his father wanted for him and struck out on his own.

He found his niche at Foxdale, and luxuriated in being surrounded by horses - until disaster struck. Seven horses are stolen from Foxdale Farm. Stumbling upon the theft, Steve is badly roughed up but manages to escape from the hardened thieves. Events go from bad to worse. Steve takes a number of beatings but won't give up his search for the men responsible. At Risk is so full of action, the reader doesn't notice turning the pages until a happening ends and breath is restored. The ending also is breathtaking.

Though Steve is almost too upright to be true, his thoughts bring him down to human level. His girlfriend Rachel is a little nebulous but that clears up in subsequent books. If you like horses, you'll love At Risk. If you never really thought about them, you'll begin to look at them in a different light after reading this enjoyable book.
