Even underwater youngsters need sitters, according to author Nick Ward. In a sturdy oversize hardcover, Ward's text and illustrations stand out, reflecting bubbling water with dwellers in large-figured blues, purples, yellow and orange stripes. They all live - i.e. swim around - in a house full of furnishings.

Anna swims into the home of the Shark family to baby-sit Sammy and Sophie Shark while their parents go out for the evening. Small Sammy has an 'unfortunate habit'. When he gets too excited, Sammy bites things, with a definitive 'CRUNCH'. Anna prepares their dinner of 'Kiddie Fingers', plays a card game of 'SNAP', and then they watch their favorite TV show 'Terrors of the Deep'. Sammy's 'tail twitched with excitement' and unfortunately he bit furniture, food trays, and even the television set.

Anna settles Sammy and his sister into bed for the night, Sammy has an awesome dream and - yup! - he crunches parts of his bedroom furniture. Don't Eat the Babysitter is quite a fish story - unusual fun and unusually funny.
