Cotton Malone, former top operative for the U.S. Justice Department, has recently retired and become a book dealer in Copenhagen. With one phone call and a strange robbery involving his former boss, Stephanie Nelle, he is quickly thrown back into the cloak and dagger world. Armed with clues from her husband's journal, Nelle and Malone set out to crack a nearly 700-year-old code involving the Knights Templar.

The reign of the Knights Templar ended in 1314 with the death of their last master. Until that point they had safeguarded pilgrims in the Holy Lands, served as a religious avenging army, possessed shocking knowledge, and amassed staggering wealth. Scholars and fortune hunters have been tantalized for ages by stories of the hidden treasures of the Templars.

Soon Malone and Nelle are entangled in an ancient web of puzzles scattered across Europe. As the story unfolds, Nelle struggles with the former deaths of her husband and son, both of whom had been involved in the quest. They were not alone in their search. Raymond de Roquefort, a religious zealot with assassins at his command, trails Malone and Nelle, driven to obtain the information they possess. Others too join in the search. Along with treasure, the players are searching for the Great Devise, information about the church that could rock its very foundations.

This thrilling story is steeped in history. Its mysteries are ones that have enthralled generations. The plot's twists and turns make for intriguing reading, along a fascinating journey of intrigue, treachery, lust for power, and above all - the search for truth.
