On February 2, Mrs. Connor teaches her students about Groundhog Day. She explains the holiday tradition to them, and they are fascinated. Lacking an actual groundhog, students and teacher decide to experiment with Chester, the class hamster. Lo and behold, the students are delighted when Chester sees his shadow.

This is a ready-to-read book for beginning readers. The concept of using a rodent as a predictor of weather will probably be interesting to many children, and the words are just at the right level for newer readers. The illustrations are cartoon-like and fun, complementing the text. Groundhog Day is a worthwhile first reader.
