The subtitle of this book is key, as readers who have some knowledge of Kashmir's history will get the most out of it. The culture, customs, religion and poetry of that country are all part of the ambience in these tales. More vignettes than stories, they seem simple, but the undercurrent of unease in the residents of the border community cannot be denied.

Each tale is linked by a character or a location to another, so each story reveals a little bit more about the people themselves and their situation. A gentle humor pervades all, and the clash of scientific principles with old beliefs is well told. 17 Tomatoes: Tales from Kashmir is beautiful writing. It will be good to read more of this author's work.
