Six o'clock TV news anchor Maxi Poole has been placed on the graveyard shift. Why? It's the only thought in her mind - well, almost the only one. Getting enough sleep rates high with her other concerns. Not only is she to monitor the nighttime happenings at an L.A. park, but she is also to anchor her six o'clock evening show, among other myriad duties. What's a girl to do?

What else? Maxi does as she's told. She won't risk losing her job. She just hopes this isn't a ploy to oust her from the station. As she contemplates her dark future, crime rears its ugly head. A neighbor is killed, as is a prostitute and a fellow worker at the station. What's happening?

Maxi is a welcome figure on the mystery novel scene. This is the fifth book in her series and Kelly Lange has created not only a captivating plot but a fascinating protagonist. Like all of us, Maxi has her fears but she manages to push them aside to get her job done. Her ongoing relationship with a foreign correspondent remains in the background as she allows herself to be wooed by a stringer - a free lance reporter.

The action-packed Graveyard Shift moves at a fast clip, as do Maxi's emotions. And the surprise climax is one I didn't see coming, even though the clues were there.
